YMCA HQ is proud to boast the arrival of their new and exclusive free DIY Comedy Workshops for 12-17 year olds running from the 9th-11th of January, but with such an appealing opportunity, places are filling up fast. (Register now: http://bit.ly/2hC8z4o)

With the currently scarce offerings in mind, YMCA HQ has partnered with Gelo to provide professional performers, teaching stage-craft, spontaneity, character and narrative to close the gap in what’s available.

“The DIY comedy workshops came about after I had a chat with the organisers of the Perth Comedy Festival earlier in the year and found out that there isn’t much in terms of youth development opportunities for young people in Perth in comedy,” HQ Centre Manager Andrew Rigg said.

“The workshops are the first phase for us as we look to develop a youth comedy program; they’ll involve giving participants some new skills and introducing them to improv comedy.”

The classes will be delivered by members of Perth’s foremost improv comedy team – The Big HOO-HAA! – who have sold out shows in WA with alumni that includes Tim Minchin, Claire Hooper, Sam Longley (Mix 94.5), Andrea Gibbs (ABC) and many more.

Made possible by the City of Vincent and Drug Aware, Andrew says the workshops are a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn new life skills, gain confidence and start a career in comedy - but positions are filling up fast.

“Places are limited and registration is a must - people can go to the YMCA HQ Facebook page and find the event for the workshops and there is a link provided for the online registration, or they can drop into the HQ office and pick up a registration form,” Andrew advised.

With no previous experience required and no costs involved, the workshops are open to people of all abilities within the specified age group.

But for the aspiring comedy performers, HQ’s offer doesn’t stop after the January 10th.

“After these workshops we plan to run sketch writing workshops a bit later in the New Year and we’ll start further developing the program from there.

“Hopefully we’ll see workshop participants in the years ahead on stage at comedy festivals or performing around the world,” Andrew said.
