YMCA World Challenge shootout competition lands at Mike Barnett Sports Complex

Youth

Every year YMCAs from 119 countries come together to take on a unique World Challenge which brings young people together from all of the communities we operate in, in a fun, inclusive and welcoming environment.

The World Challenge commemorates YMCA’s birthday and with this year’s being our 173rd, it’s certainly an occasion worth having some fun for!

This year’s theme aims to empower young people through basketball, which is incredibly relevant to us given basketball was invented by the YMCA in Canada in 1891, and today we’re proud to be home to the Rockingham Flames State Basketball League.

YMCA WA’s Mike Barnett Sports Complex has partnered with the Rockingham Flames to put on a three-point shootout competition on Friday 2nd June for the exciting World Challenge event.

The competition will take place in the break between the women’s and men’s game at 8.00pm. Five lucky Junior Flames state basketball players will be paired up with YMCA WA staff members and the pairs will play against each other.

Each team will have the opportunity to shoot from five different positions around the three-point line, and the winning team will be those with the most accumulative points.

“Basketball is such a big part of the community at Mike Barnett and this World Challenge is a fun way of showing the life lessons you can learn from basketball from a young age,” YMCA WA Acting Executive Manager of Service Delivery Brooke Draper said.

“It’s not only great for everyone to see the skills required to play but also the discipline, teamwork, endurance and passion that goes into it- I think the junior basketballers will be teaching our staff a few things on the night!”

The Mike Barnett doors will open for this spectacular event at 6pm with women’s tip off at 6:30pm, and the World Challenge event at 8pm before men’s tip off at 8:30pm.

With a fully licenced bar, the Flames’ newly named mascot Burnie and tasty Impressions Catering, there’s something for everyone at this family-friendly event.
