Ross delivers a final message, wrapping up a great year at YMCA WA
In partnership with YMCA WA and Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS), students of Newman Primary School (NPS) and Newman Senior High School (NSHS) registered on the Fuel2Learn meal program, cooked an end of year feast for their families to mark the end of a great year, on Friday 7 December.
Twelve Year 6 to Year 10 students from NPS and NSHS took charge in The Edge commercial kitchen, with supervision and guidance from Sue Lovett, YMCA RSAS Coordinator and Courtney Moyes, YMCA Volunteer and NSHS Home Economics teacher, to prepare three delicious dishes; Greek pasta salad, steak and an Eton mess of deconstructed Pavlova for dessert.
As a result of the program, one young man’s attendance level at school has grown from 0% in March to over 60% by June and he actively participates in the Fuel2Learn program each week.
“I am so proud of all the students as they have come such a long way since starting the program earlier this year. They have upskilled their culinary skills and have become very confident in the kitchen. It’s been great to see the older high school students mentor the younger students and work together so well” said Sue Lovett.

The young people of Belmont took the opportunity to unwind with a variety of fun activities at annual Stress less Fest 2018, as part of Mental Health Week 2018.
Organised by the Base@Belmont Youth Committee – a team of talented young people meeting weekly, planning youth engagement events for the Belmont community – the free community event took place on Tuesday 16 October at Belmont Skate Park, welcoming people of all ages.
Activities were offered at the plenty, with youth collecting memories at the photo booth, slam dunking at inflatable basketball, chilling out in the game vault and filling rumbling stomachs at the sausage sizzle and fairy floss machine.
Stress Less Fest is in its second year, with the inaugural event meeting the Belmont community for the first time in late 2017.
Laura Dunlop, Youth Worker at The Base confirmed another successful year.
“I’m really proud the way the Youth Committee worked together to create this great event.”
“Our Youth Committee identified mental health as a real issue for young people, and felt they could help by raising awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and provide a fun day out".” Explained Laura.
Base@Belmont is managed by YMCA WA and funded by City of Belmont. Base@Belmont provides activities, events and access to training and counselling for young people aged 11 – 25 in a drug and alcohol free space.
